THE PRACTICAL GUIDE
A better way to compare shoe sizes
A familiar size number is a starting point. Your measurements and the chart attached to the exact listing are more useful than a universal size-up rule.
Measure both feet before comparing charts
Nike's measurement guidance uses both feet and the longer measurement as the reference. Record length in centimetres and note your usual width needs. For your comparison, keep those numbers beside each listing rather than translating once and assuming every shape will fit. Ask which chart belongs to the selected version, and whether its measurements describe the foot, the insole or another part of the shoe.
Nike: How to Measure Your FootKeep size labels and foot length separate
Nike explicitly distinguishes the CM size printed on its shoe boxes from measured foot length. That is a useful reason to read column headings carefully. When a listing shows only US, UK or EU labels, ask for the corresponding measurement method before choosing. An official brand chart can explain that brand's sizing approach; it does not establish the fit or manufacturing accuracy of an unrelated source listing.
Nike: Men's Footwear Size ChartUse photographs to prepare specific questions
Compare the toe shape, sole outline, closure and visible size label across the listing images. If buyer reference photos are available, check which size and colour they show before applying them to your choice. Request a clearer view of any detail that matters to you. Photographs can support a visual comparison, but cannot establish comfort, durability, authenticity or how a shoe will perform during sport.
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE
A more useful checklist.
Use these questions with the exact product, option and source listing.
- 01
Record both foot lengths and your width requirements.
- 02
Confirm whether the chart measures feet, insoles or the shoe itself.
- 03
Check the selected colour and size against any buyer reference photos.
- 04
Confirm size availability and the return conditions on the source listing.
QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING
Shoes FAQ
Should I always order one size larger?
There is no reliable rule for every shoe. Start with your measurements and the chart for the exact listing, then ask about the shape and width if those details are missing.
Is the CM number on a shoe box the same as foot length?
Not necessarily. Nike specifically distinguishes these values in its official chart. Read the measurement definition rather than assuming all centimetre labels mean the same thing.
Do buyer photos prove the shoes will fit?
No. They may show visible details of the photographed pair, but cannot establish your fit or comfort. Check the photographed size and use them alongside actual measurements.
