THE PRACTICAL GUIDE
Separate frame style from verified lens information
Decorative frames and sunglasses are not interchangeable. Start with the intended use, then check dimensions and the evidence behind any lens claim.
Check UV information rather than lens darkness
The FDA recommends sunglasses labelled UV400 or 100% UV protection and explains that dark tint does not demonstrate UV protection. A source title repeating those words is still a claim to check, not testing performed by this directory. Ask for information tied to the exact model and lenses. If that information is missing, do not infer protective performance from colour, styling, packaging or buyer reference photographs.
FDA: Sunglasses and UV ProtectionKeep polarization and UV protection separate
The CDC explains that polarized or mirrored lenses can reduce reflected light without providing greater UV protection by themselves. Read these descriptions as different features. For your comparison, list the claimed UV rating and polarization separately, then note what evidence is available for each. Do not treat a simple screen demonstration or a reflective lens appearance as confirmation that an unknown pair meets a protective standard.
CDC Yellow Book: Sun Exposure in TravelersCompare frame dimensions before choosing a shape
Use a comfortable pair as a reference and ask for lens width, bridge width, temple length and overall frame width. Check whether the product is a complete pair of sunglasses, a decorative frame or an optical frame requiring separate lenses. Ask about hinges and included accessories only where they matter to your use. Fit, prescription suitability and lens performance need more than an appealing front-facing photograph.

QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING
Eyewear FAQ
Can QC photographs verify UV400 protection?
No. Photos can show visible appearance and labels, but cannot establish lens UV performance. Seek evidence for the exact pair rather than treating the label as our verification.
Does polarized automatically mean UV-safe?
No. Polarization and UV protection describe different features. Check the claimed UV protection separately and ask for evidence tied to the actual lenses.
Are darker lenses always more protective?
No. The FDA states that lens darkness does not indicate UV protection. If you cannot confirm protection, an eye care professional may be able to check the lenses.
