THE PRACTICAL GUIDE
Read a bottoms size chart without mixing measurements
A single waist label does not describe the whole fit. Use a pair you like as a reference and ask how each dimension was measured.
Record waist, hips and inseam separately
Levi's size guidance distinguishes waist, hip and inseam measurements, with inseam following the inside of the leg. Use those categories to organise your own comparison, but do not apply its numerical chart to an unrelated item. Check whether the source chart gives body measurements or flat garment dimensions. If only a waist label appears, ask for the missing hip and leg measurements before treating it as a complete fit description.
Levi's: Product Size GuideCompare rise and leg shape with a pair you wear
Lay out a reference pair and note how you measure the waistband, front rise, inside leg and hem opening. Request the same method from the source listing where possible. For elasticated waists, ask whether the stated width is relaxed or stretched. For shorts, compare inside leg and total length separately. These questions help describe a silhouette without assuming that a style name or size label guarantees the same fit.
Keep fabric and care questions specific
The FTC's guide explains why clothing care instructions matter. For bottoms, ask for the fibre description and the actual care information before deciding whether the item suits your routine. If stretch is important, request a clearer material description rather than judging elasticity from a posed photograph. Do not assume a stated wash, distressing effect or fabric appearance establishes shrinkage, colour transfer, durability or how the garment will change after wear.

QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING
Bottoms FAQ
Is inseam the same as the full length of trousers?
No. Inseam follows the inside leg; the full outside length is a different measurement. Confirm the chart's labels and measuring points before comparing numbers.
Will the same waist label fit across every listing?
Do not assume it will. Compare the exact chart and check whether it refers to the body, a relaxed waistband or finished garment dimensions.
How should I compare elasticated trousers?
Ask for relaxed and stretched waist information where available, along with rise and hip measurements. Compare them with a pair you wear using the same measuring method.
