THE PRACTICAL GUIDE

Check what fits inside and how the bag carries

A tote, shoulder bag and fitted backpack need different measurements. Start with your use, then ask for the dimensions that answer it.

01

Measure your essentials and the usable opening

Write down the objects you need to carry, including any protective case, then ask about the opening and usable interior dimensions. An exterior height or width is not a complete answer to whether an object will fit. For shoulder bags and totes, compare strap drop with a bag you already use. Ask whether the photographed bag is empty or packed when interpreting its overall shape.

02

Treat backpack fit as a separate question

Osprey sizes its adult backpacks by torso length and explains how to measure between the base of the neck and the top of the hip bones. Its ranges apply to its own products. Use that distinction when researching a structured backpack: ask whether the back length is adjustable and what fit range is stated. The same torso-fitting method is not a sizing standard for a tote or handbag.

03

Check the airline before calling a bag cabin-ready

The FAA advises travellers to check their airline's carry-on rules for item count and maximum size. For your shortlist, compare the actual bag dimensions with the rules for your own booking and journey. Ask how straps, handles or a packed shape affect those measurements. A directory title such as travel bag cannot guarantee cabin acceptance, and a size that works on one trip may not answer another airline's requirements.

QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING

Bags FAQ

Will a bag labelled for a laptop fit my computer?

Confirm the usable compartment and opening dimensions, including your computer's case. A screen-size description alone does not establish the dimensions or fit of the compartment.

Is backpack size based only on height?

Not always. Osprey's fitted adult packs use torso length. Check the exact product's fit system rather than applying that manufacturer's ranges to every backpack.

Can I assume a travel bag is accepted as carry-on?

No. Compare its measured dimensions and your permitted item count with the airline rules for your booking. The directory does not guarantee baggage acceptance.
